Day 8: Vietnam

on

The day today was filled with activities. First, we had to go to the port to look at all the shipping procedures and how the warehouse was organized and ran. It was very hot out, so walking outside was quite treacherous. It was still very interesting to see how the warehouse and the boats were ran and loaded, but overall it was not that much information. Okay, well it was a lot of information, but not much that we could really apply because I don’t think in the near future I will be working at a shipping dock in the blistering heat. Even if I somehow do later in life, it is very unrealistic for me to remember what everything meant at the time. There were some cool pictures though.

The second site visit of the day we had to go to the peanut factory, Dan-D Pak. It was a very long drive, and I image most of the students as well as myself were not too ecstatic to drive so far and it be so late. However, the factory was nothing like expected. It was very luxurious, housing a pool, a grand piano, an entire bar for the workers, and much more. Everything was very luxurious and up to date, which is unlike most of the places we have already visited on our site visits. The tour ran through the ground floor and what they do, such as roasting the nuts and sorting them and whatnot. I thought it was very interesting how they had very strict protocols for the cross contamination and the shoes. They made us all switch out of our sneakers for lime green crocs. Even they had them on. There was a shoe washer outside mostly every door that we had to step on before stepping into the building. It shows they are very procedural and safe about cross contamination. Even the workers workin on the nuts had full hazmat suits on. Was very interesting to see. We toured the full nice facility and then sat down for a little powerpoint and then were on our way. The drive back took an insane amount of time, so we got back at about 7pm. Overall, the day was not bad and the site visits were pretty cool.
