Last Day at BCU!

on

Today was another really interesting day at Birmingham City University and I honestly learned so much more than I expected. This morning we had a lecture about ECGs, and although I knew they were related to the heart, I never realized how much detail and knowledge actually goes into reading and understanding them. The lecture was definitely more theory-based than hands-on, but it still taught me so many important things that I know will help me in the future.

One of the biggest things we focused on today was understanding the difference between electrodes and leads, which confused me at first because they sound like the exact same thing. I learned that electrodes are the sticky pads that are placed on the patient’s body, while leads are the actual views or perspectives of the heart’s electrical activity that are created from those electrodes. Before today, I genuinely thought they were interchangeable terms, so learning the difference made everything start to click a little more.

We also learned about how ECGs are used to measure the electrical activity of the heart and how healthcare workers can use them to identify abnormalities or issues happening inside the body. It amazed me how much information can be gathered from something that just looks like lines and waves on a monitor. The lecturer explained how each lead gives a different view of the heart, almost like looking at the same object from multiple angles, which I thought was a really good way to explain it.

At first, all the diagrams and terminology felt overwhelming because there are so many placements, names, and patterns to remember, but as the lecture went on, I became more interested in it. I liked learning about where the electrodes are placed on the chest and limbs and how specific placement is extremely important in order to get accurate readings. Even moving an electrode slightly could change the results, which really showed me how detail-oriented healthcare can be.

Another thing I found interesting was how ECGs are such a common but important tool in hospitals. Nurses use them all the time to monitor patients and detect problems quickly. It made me realize that even though technology is advanced, healthcare professionals still need strong knowledge and critical thinking skills to understand what the results actually mean. A machine can print out the information, but it takes trained professionals to interpret it correctly and care for the patient.

Even though we were sitting in a lecture for most of the morning, I genuinely enjoyed it because it felt like we were learning real things that matter in healthcare. Every day at BCU has been teaching me something different about nursing, and it is making me even more excited for the future. I think hearing about real medical scenarios and understanding the reasoning behind procedures makes everything feel much more meaningful.

After the lecture, we were all ready for food, so we went to Boston Tea Party and honestly it might have been one of my favorite meals of the entire trip so far. I ordered avocado toast and a matcha latte, and somehow both of them were absolutely perfect. The avocado toast was so fresh and flavorful, and the bread had the perfect crunch. The matcha latte was probably the best one I have ever had — creamy, smooth, and not overly sweet.

The café itself had such a relaxing atmosphere, which was nice after spending the morning focused on lectures and information. We all got to sit together, talk, laugh, and just enjoy the moment for a little while. I feel like some of my favorite memories on this trip have actually been during moments like these when everyone is together just enjoying good food and each other’s company.

Later on, we traveled to London, which was so exciting because it finally feels like we are in the middle of one of the most famous cities in the world. Even arriving in London felt surreal. The city is so busy and energetic, and everywhere you look there is something happening. Seeing the lights, streets, and buildings made me realize how huge and lively London really is.

To finish off the night, we went out for dinner and had really good food, which was honestly the perfect ending to such a long day. After spending the morning learning about ECGs and the evening traveling and exploring, it felt nice to just sit down, eat, and reflect on everything we did today.
