May 20- Cloud Forest Crazy

Limiting tourism in a place like Monteverde is a necessary tradeoff and honestly the right call. When you walk the trails and see areas that are closed off or restricted, it makes sense why. Monteverde is one of the most biodiverse places in the world and climate change has already taken a toll on it, so allowing unlimited tourism would only make things worse. The Monteverde Institute pointed out that around 26% of Costa Rica’s land is protected through national parks and reserves, and that by 2021 about 54% of the country was covered in forest again. That kind of recovery does not happen by accident, it happens because people made the decision to prioritize the environment even when it was inconvenient.

The tradeoff is real though. Monteverde has about 8,000 residents and a lot of them depend on tourism to make a living, so restrictions do have an impact on the local economy. But the way I see it, a damaged forest brings in fewer visitors over time which hurts the economy more in the long run. The Monteverde Institute talked about building a sustainable community rather than just a profitable tourist attraction, and that stuck with me. Sustainability is not just about making money today, it is about protecting the ecosystem, the culture, and the resources so future generations actually get to experience it too.

The presentation also connected this to Costa Rica’s bigger picture through the three pillars of sustainability, which are environmental, economic, and social. Costa Rica produces about 99% of its energy from renewable sources and has made serious investments in conservation over the years. What stood out to me is that these things do not just happen on their own, they require real decisions and real sacrifices. Limiting access to a cloud forest is one of those sacrifices, and when you look at how much Costa Rica has recovered environmentally, it is hard to argue that it has not been worth it. Places like Monteverde are proof that you can protect nature and still support a community around it, you just have to be intentional about how you do it.
