Today we visited the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Monteverde Institute. I learned how hard it can be to balance protecting the environment while also supporting tourism and the economy. While walking the Sendero Corazón del Bosque trail, I noticed that some areas were closed off or had limited access. Monteverde is one of the most biodiverse places in the world, and because climate change and tourism have already affected the forest over the years, limiting human impact is important to help protect it for the future.
The presentation later in the day connected these ideas to Costa Rica’s larger sustainability goals. Sustainability was explained through the three pillars of environmental, economic, and social. Costa Rica focuses heavily on protecting the environment while still supporting local economies and cultural identity. I learned that 26% of Costa Rica’s land is protected through national parks, reserves, and wildlife refuges, and that in 2021, about 54% of the country’s landmass was covered by forests again. The country also produces around 99% of its energy from renewable sources. This shows that Costa Rica takes conservation seriously and is willing to make investments to protect future generations.
I think limiting tourism in places like Monteverde represents good stewardship and a necessary tradeoff rather than an unfair restriction. Tourism does help the local economy, especially in a community like Monteverde with around 8,000 residents, but allowing unlimited access could damage the environment more. The Monteverde Institute emphasized the idea of building a sustainable community instead of simply creating a profitable tourist attraction. That idea stood out to me because it shows that sustainability is not only about making money today, but also about protecting ecosystems, local culture, and resources for the future. Although restrictions may frustrate some visitors, preserving the cloud forest ultimately benefits both the environment and future generations who deserve the chance to experience it too.
