Day 10 May 11th
During this part of the trip, we visited a floating farm and the RDM campus, both of which focused heavily on innovation and sustainability. One photo I took shows the student side of RDM, where many STEM labs are located. The area had a modern, industrial feel and demonstrated how education and hands-on work are combined in one place.
At the floating farm, I learned about a unique approach to agriculture. The farm produces milk while floating on water, and we were told that the conditions can actually lead to higher-quality milk. The farm also focuses on sustainability by feeding cows with local and organic waste, reducing overall food waste. They use an AI-powered milking system, which allows for efficient and consistent production. However, we also learned that the farm faces financial challenges, showing that even innovative sustainable solutions can struggle economically.
At RDM, what stood out was the strong connection between students, startups, and real-world business projects. While we were there, we saw a startup company developing a 3D printer capable of producing ship parts while at sea. This idea could allow ships to create replacement parts mid-trip, reducing delays, costs, and the need for large inventories. The campus also encourages hands-on challenges, such as designing and building a car within a year, helping students gain real-world engineering experience.
This day highlighted both cultural and sustainability themes. The collaboration at RDM showed how Dutch education emphasizes innovation, teamwork, and practical application. The floating farm demonstrated key sustainability concepts like the circular economy and resource efficiency by reusing waste and minimizing environmental impact. Overall, the experience showed that while sustainable and innovative ideas are promising, they must also be economically sustainable to succeed long-term.
