Day 4: Engineering and Environment at Twente

Day 4 was our main day of transportation to the university of Twente. We took a bus over to the town of Enschede. Upon arrival we were given a tour of the campus and shown some of the sustainable aspects of the campus. For instance, one of the buildings has a glass shell like structure on the outside which automatically regulates the temperature in the building to keep it more constant. We were also introduced to some of the engineering groups on campus whom we would learn more about later in the day.

After the tour we had a lecture about kristelbads. They’re a multipurpose system in the lowest part of the city that the Dutch use to filter and store water. After a big storm, if the local water storage fills up, it spills into the kristalbad and ensures that the whole city doesn’t flood. Once the lecture concluded we went out and walked to one of the kristalbads nearby to really see them in action.

On the walk back I even saw some people rowing but in a different type of way than I’ve ever seen it, apparently the Dutch get creative with their boats. My team uses sleek carbon fiber boats and they were using older wider boats which were more traditional in the sport.

For dinner once we got back on campus we were given some time to hang out with the students of twente and they were telling us about their traditions surrounding college in the Netherlands and we got to share with them our doings too. For instance fraternity’s in the Netherlands are much more few and far between than in the states and they are much more preppy too.
