Today we took a trip to Münster, Germany. Here, we took a tour of the city and learned about its rich, deep history. On our tour, we talked about how the church there would have cages where people would be hung in them if they spoke out against the religion. It was crazy to think about how people acted back then; it almost reminds me of the Salem witch trials. Also, in this church, you could see gargoyles attached to the sides that acted as drainpipes for rainwater from the roof. It is insane how advanced some of these old buildings are and how they were able to think of these things back then. After this, we saw the building where the Treaty of Westphalia was signed. This treaty ended the 30 Years’ War, a major conflict in the Middle Ages. We also learned about this city’s involvement in WWII and Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen, who was a priest known for speaking out against the Nazis and their actions. It was crazy to learn about how much history was involved in this small city. They have been involved in multiple major events for Europe, and the city center still looks the same as the old days. After this, we took a 3-hour bus ride to Rotterdam, where we would spend the rest of our trip. On this bus ride, we took some time to reflect on everything we saw. It still amazes me how this city is still striving after everything it has been through.
