Today was my groups assigned company visit, and we took a quick tram ride to the KUKA factory in Augsburg. I remembered seeing KUKA robots the day before at BMW and being amazed by what they were capable of, so I was excited for the visit. When we arrived we watched a cool video and robot presentation. After having some coffee they provided us, we listened to an employee who stepped in at the last minute to answer questions about the company. I learned that KUKA robots can range from around 4.000 euro up to 1.000.000 euro. Some of the cheaper ones are even used for surgery, which surprised me because I thought machines like that would cost much more. The robots are used for much more than making cars because they can help build houses, assist with surgeries, and do many other tasks. After the Q&A session we split into groups for the factory tour. The robots are built with both robots and humans, and most of the parts come from outside suppliers. Because of that, the process is less complicated than BMW since they mainly assemble the pieces together. I also remember seeing code running on one of the machines, and it was such a high level of technology that I could barely understand what was happening. Someone asked our tour guide if he would rather have a human or a robot perform surgery on him, and he said he would trust the robot more because it is more precise and makes fewer mistakes. I agreed with him and think I would trust a robot to do surgery on me as well. Another interesting part was the painting process. Even though the main color is orange, customers can choose any color they want. Once the robot was finished it was moved into a paint room where a worker spray painted it until it was fully covered. We also learned that most of the robots have a lifespan of around 14–18 years. Overall the visit was really interesting, and I was glad we got to visit our assigned company early on in the trip.
