I decided to stay in Augsburg on the last day of the trip. Ironically, our final day ended up being the nicest weather we had the entire time, and I did not want to spend any more time on a bus or train. I woke up, had our awesome hotel breakfast, and then spent around five hours walking through the city exploring different streets and areas that I had not gotten to see yet.
One of the places I came across was the Augsburg ice hockey arena. I wanted to visit the pro shop, but unfortunately the season had already ended, so it was closed. The arena itself was located in an area surrounded by a lot of greenery and trees, which felt odd for a hockey venue. Another cool feature was that there was an outdoor rink next to it, which I assume is probably used for inline hockey during the summer months.
I was also able to walk through the Augsburg Cathedral, which was incredibly beautiful and massive inside. While I was there, I ended up buying an attachment for my backpack that had German words written on it. The woman working there told me it translated to “Safe Travels,” which felt like a crazy coincidence considering we leave tomorrow.
One thing that still amazes me about Augsburg is the sheer number and variety of restaurants throughout the city. As I mentioned in earlier blogs, there is such a wide range of food options available everywhere. Bavarian cuisine was something I truly enjoyed during this trip, and it is definitely something I will miss when returning home.
After exploring for most of the day, I went back to the hotel room, packed my bags, and then decided to head back to Rathskeller to try something different from what I had before. I ended up ordering a steak dish along with a few pretzels, and it was excellent. After dinner, I continued walking around the city, tried a few pastries that I had not yet tasted, and even bought some extra snacks for the long flight home tomorrow.
Later in the evening, I went for a good run and then met back up with the group for one last celebration together before leaving. Afterward, I tried to get some sleep, knowing I would hopefully get even more rest during the bus ride and flight the next day. Hopefully everything goes according to plan.
