Since we had already completed the discussion with Audi on our first day, today consisted of only the factory tour and museum visit. When we first arrived, we had some free time to explore the store and look around. There were many cool model cars on display, as well as real cars featuring current and future models. One display that stood out to me featured Audi’s future turn signal lights, which I found especially interesting.

After some shopping, we placed all of our belongings into storage lockers and began the factory tour. We had arrived late to the BMW tour earlier in the trip, so we missed the building where they press metal into shape. However, at Audi, we were able to see this process firsthand. When we walked in, there were massive machines unlike anything I had seen before, pressing metal into different shapes. Our guide explained that there are around six machines used per part, each bending and cutting different sections, and approximately 400 parts go into each car. I couldn’t imagine how many machines were operating throughout the entire factory. It was also incredibly loud, and you could feel the ground shake every time one of the machines pressed down.

As we moved to the assembly line, each step focused on putting together a small part of the vehicle, similar to what we saw at BMW. However, Audi’s process felt more organized and contained within a smaller space. At BMW, we had to walk through multiple buildings, whereas Audi operated in one large warehouse where the car moved from beginning to end.

After the tour, we explored the museum. It was especially interesting because it showcased cars from the very beginning of production through futuristic concept vehicles. The exhibits demonstrated how Audi’s current designs inspire future models, as well as strategies to reduce screens and noise in the front seat to improve the driving experience.

One display featured a car without an engine, leaving empty space underneath the front hood. I had never seen anything like it before and wondered how different it would feel to drive a car with such a different structure.

Overall, it was fascinating to compare BMW and Audi, from their future strategies and company histories to their approaches to efficient assembly lines and producing high-quality vehicles that help them stand out in the automotive industry.
