Day 5: Steps, Alps, and Chandeliers: A Day at Neuschwanstein

As a child, you always hear of castles and see them in movies, but to be in one was an entirely different experience. This morning we woke up pretty early and departed for the castle around 6:30 am. After arriving at the castle, the first thing you notice is the castle, but the more obvious view is the Alps. The Alps are right behind the castle, depending on which side you’re on. As we headed to the castle, we went through a little town, and then started our ascent to the castle. The group was supposed to be split originally, with one group taking the horse carriage and the other walking. But we decided that everyone should walk.

As we ascended the first stop was a section right below the castle. As you’re standing here you’re able to get a clear view of the entire castle. Along with this secition, you’re able to see the beautiful fields outside across the land. Before enterning the castle we walked around it to get a view of the original area in which we came from. When you look down it makes you wonder how you just walked all of that. We stayed here for a little and enjoyed the view before our tour.

Once you enter, the first thing you notice is the size of everything, ranging from windows, beds, paintings, and even the size of the room. Once you think one room is big, you enter an even bigger room. What stood out to me was the amount of detail within every component of the wall. His sink was a dove and had a wooden castle carved above his bed. We walked into his main room at the top of the castle, and I was genuinely amazed. They had a chandelier hanging that looked like it belonged in a castle. The paintings all over the wall made it feel of great importance, while the throne sat two steps above everyone else. I was also amazed by how many decorations they put into the rooms. Each room had paintings either hanging or the entire walls were painted.

I do believe that they’ve done a great job of preserving the castle and the area without destroying the history. You obviously understand that tourists will come through the area, but it doesn’t seem like that. As I stood on the mountain, I could genuinely appreciate the beauty of the landscape. Everywhere you look, you’re amazed by what you find. Especially when we climbed to the top of the mountain behind the castle. It made the last few days of early mornings and thousands of steps all worth it. I couldn’t complain anymore because the beauty overwhelmed the need to complain.
