I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. As I reflect on the past two weeks, I am filled with overwhelming gratitude. I remember being scared to go to an unfamiliar place with people I didn’t know very well. I wasn’t sure how much I would gain from this experience. Now, I can easily say that this was the best decision I could have made. Missing Plus3 last year was disappointing, but if that had not happened, I would not have met the incredible people on this trip. I am leaving Germany with friendships and connections that I will cherish long after graduation.

This program was packed from start to finish. While it was exhausting at times, I am incredibly grateful for how much of Germany I was able to explore. From historic cities and castles to manufacturing facilities and cultural landmarks, every day offered something new.

The most valuable thing I am bringing home is a greater appreciation for studying and working internationally. I am especially grateful that I was able to study in a country where many people speak English. However, it also made me realize how much Americans, including myself, rely on others to accommodate us. I wish more of us made the effort to learn other languages and better understand different cultures.

My perspective on business has changed as well. I previously thought that automotive manufacturing and supply chain management had straightforward goals: develop cars, make them, and then sell them. After visiting automotive companies across Bavaria, I now understand how complex these industries are. They must balance marketing, engineering, economics, sustainability, and countless other functions.

The most important lesson Bavaria taught me is that national pride and national shame can coexist. Germany’s willingness to acknowledge and reflect on its history while continuing to innovate and move forward left a lasting impression on me. Visiting places like Dachau demonstrated the importance of speaking up for others and thinking critically before it is too late.

Plus3 was the perfect way for me to experience studying abroad without the commitment of a full semester abroad. The two weeks were busy, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Thank you, Dr. Feick, Phil, and all of my fellow classmates for creating memories I will never forget!
