Day 10: Built to Move: Inside MAN Truck & Bus

This was our first company visit since KUKA on Wednesday, so I was excited to get back into things. This visit is quite interesting compared to the BMW and KUKA because MAN deals with mainly trucks and buses. We made our way to the facility and had a guest talk with one of the workers explaining the background of MAN and the types of engines they make.

One of the first things that stood out to me was the sheer size of MAN’s engines and components. Having previously toured BMW facilities, I was used to seeing passenger vehicles and their production processes. At MAN, however, the scale was entirely different. The engines were designed to power heavy-duty trucks and industrial applications, highlighting the different engineering challenges involved in commercial transportation. The guide mentioned that not only are they focused on trucks and buses, they also make engines for ships, yachts, and tanks. He even said that some of the engines they make are the size of a 3 story tall building which was insane to me. They don’t make those engines there, but I would’ve loved to see that. Walking through the factory, the amount of humans was very evident, many more than we saw at KUKA and BMW. The amount of components and screws in the engines, it makes sense why there were so many humans in production.

After the amazing tour, and a bump on the back of the bus, we made our way to the Kunstbunker in Nurnberg, Germany. This bunker was used by the Nazis to preserve very valuable artwork from Allied bombing. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any artwork, but we did see manuscripts and historical artifacts that were preserved there. Walking in there, they warned us about how cold it was going to be due to the climate control systems which was not a lie. The natural rock structure of the bunker really stood out to me to protect against bombing vibrations and fire.

We finished the day by having some free time in Nurnberg, and we found this spot that sold bratwurst sandwiches for only 4 euros!! They got it out to you so fast and it was amazing. We were finished by 3:30 which was pretty early for us and we got back and spent some time preparing our presentations that are coming up very soon!
