After an early wake up around 7 am, we headed to the bus at 8 am for the ride back to Munich Airport. While this trip has truly been a once in a lifetime experience, I was ready to go home. Once we arrived at the airport, we went through multiple passport checks before finally making it to the gate. During the nine hour flight, I watched the F1 movie, caught up on writing blogs, and listened to music to help pass the time. We had a two hour layover in Washington DC, so I thought we would have plenty of time, but it ended up being one of the most stressful parts of the trip. We had to wait in a customs line for nearly two hours, and when it was finally my turn, I realized I had forgotten about some fruit in my backpack. The customs officer placed my passport in an orange container, and I had to go to a separate area to dispose of the fruit before getting it back. At that point, our next flight was boarding in only 20 minutes. Thankfully, I made it through security and got to the gate just in time. By the time I arrived, boarding was beginning within the next 10 minutes, bringing an end to a very stressful layover experience. The final flight to Pittsburgh was only about 45 minutes long, which was nice after such a long day of traveling. Once we landed, we got off the plane and headed to baggage claim, where my parents were waiting for me. I’m finally back home! Looking back, there are many things I am going to miss from this trip, including the beautiful views, unique architecture, peaceful and quiet atmosphere in public spaces, and the convenience of the transportation systems. At the same time, I am looking forward to having ice again, sleeping in my own bed, eating my comfort meals, and not having to spend four euros on water everywhere I go. However, I think those differences are what make traveling abroad so special. You get to experience life in a completely different way than what you are used to, gain a new perspective on the world, and learn about new cultures. Although I am happy to be home, this trip is one I will never forget.
