Day 8: The Best City in Germany

After another good night’s sleep, I feel very energized and caught up on some much needed rest from the past week. Today was another day on the itinerary I was really looking forward to, our day trip to Munich, one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. We departed to Munich by train at around 9:30 AM, so it wasn’t too early of a morning compared to the past couple days. This was our first time on the train this week and it took us about 45 minutes to reach Munich.

Our first stop upon arrival was at the Rauthus-Glockenspiel which is known as one of Munich’s most famous attractions and is located in the tower of the New Town hall overlooking Marienplatz. We arrived shortly before 11 AM just in time for the Glockenspiel clockshow. The Glockenspiel has 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures that reenact the Wedding of Duke Wilhelm and the Coopers Dance. The show was a very cool experience and at the end of the performance, there was a rooster that crowed 3 times which signaled the conclusion of the show.

After seeing that, we had 4 hours of free time before our tour of the city. Me, Sam, and Devin found all these different food stands in the city and we tried as many different stands that had bratwurst as possible. This was my first true taste of bratwurst this trip as Augsburg didn’t have many options for it. The bratwurst was excellent and after that we made our way to Hofbrauhaus Munchen, which is the original and most famous Hofbrahaus in Germany. I’ve been to the Hofbrauhaus in Pittsburgh, but it doesn’t even compare to the one in Munich, especially since it was a Bayern Munich gameday. The whole restaurant was packed with fans getting ready for the game, chanting throughout the whole place.

We completed our free time by going to St. Peter’s Church and walking up the steps to the stop. It was 5 euros to do it and it was 300 steps to get to the top. Although I could barely catch my breath when we got to the top, the view was totally worth it. You could see all of Munich and the alps from the top, I was very glad we did it. I then finished up by walking around the church, saying a quick prayer, and let me say it was one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever seen.

Then came the city tour with our guide Hildren who was awesome. She taught us all about the history of Munich and the buildings surrounding it. I thought the Frauenkirche, the cathedral with twin towers, one for the Catholics and one for the protestants was very interesting and beautiful to see. We finished the day going to a burger place that made me feel like I was back home in the United States. I can’t believe we are halfway done with the trip already.
