Day 9: Exploring Nuremberg!

I opened my eyes at 5:00am, a little early right? This early wake up was definitely worth it to see Nuremberg. After learning more about MAN for our site visit, we made our way to the main square of Nuremberg. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this city! The architecture of the buildings were beautiful however, I learned later the history of the buildings of Nuremberg.

We went on a guided tour of Kuntzbunker, a former beer cellar that was used as a storage space for Nazi-era artwork to prevent the art from being damaged in allied bombings during World War II. I walked into this tour with little knowledge of the city of Nuremberg so this tour was one of my favorites! They discussed the rebuilding of the city after a majority of buildings were destroyed in bombings during World War II. What I found interesting was that there was a contest where architects set in their recommendations for the rebuilding of the city. There was a vote held to see if people wanted to modernize Nuremberg or keep the traditional aesthetic. Ultimately, they decided to keep it traditional.

Additionally we got to walk around town and check out some of the beautiful sights! It was interesting looking at all the buildings after the bunker tour, knowing that so many of them had to be rebuilt after the war. This visit to Nuremberg gave me a new appreciation for town. Before, I knew that Nuremberg was significant in the war but was not aware of how much the people of Nuremberg went through. This city radiates strength in the rebuilt buildings that show the preserved character of the city. Overall, Nuremberg was one of the most memorable stops on the trip, and I am grateful to have been able to see this place for myself!
