Today we toured Hirschvogel. This was the second of our five company visits for the trip. This was an interesting company to see. They focus specifically on making small forged metal parts for automobiles. The plant we visited had many large machines that ran most of the operations. I thought it was very interesting to see how robotics heavy the plant was. The people who were working were running the machines or just moving parts around. This company was also cool because It was considered a mittlestand company. This means that it was a middle sized company that remained family owned. These types of companies are very specific to Germany and they are rare to find in the US. The company was also located in a very cool location where you could see the Alps from the street. This was my first time being able to see them.
Later that day we got a chance to go to the small town of Oberammergau. The is a small city right at the base of the Alps. We had a lot of free time to explore the town. I went with a group of friends to look at all the little shops that they had there. There were a lot of cool hand carved items and other things. A lot of the shops were Christmas related. I did my first souvenir shopping here.
After shopping we took a short bus ride to a lift that took us to the top of the mountain. To get everybody to the top quickly they packed the lift with as many people as they possibly could. The ride up was cramped, but well worth it. We arrived at the top in a small building that had a tiny restaurant and when we walked outside we were surrounded by breath taking snow covered mountains. There was even some snow at the top of the mountain we were on. Even though there was snow on the mountain the weather was nice. We stayed there for hours and just enjoyed the view. After a while we headed back down the mountain in the cable cars and boarded the buses to go back to the hotel. It was a long day and I slept the whole way back.
