Off to Vietnam!

Hi everyone! My name is Maia Perks and I am a freshman in the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Business Administration. I am majoring in Accounting with a minor in French. I am not quite sure exactly what I want to do with my future yet, but that is what college is for! I spent the first 8 years of my life in Brooklyn, New York, but now I live in a small town in New Jersey just 20 minutes outside Philadelphia with my mom, dad, younger brother, and dog. I work at the University Child Development Center and I love to spend my free time exploring each of the different neighborhoods of Pittsburgh!

In my life I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to travel. My mom met my dad when she studied abroad in London and although my mom’s family lives 15 minutes away from our house, my dad’s family lives across the ocean in England. During my childhood, I have traveled throughout the United Kingdom and surrounding countries to explore and visit family. These travels sparked a curiosity in me as well as a love for exploration. All of my travel has been limited to North America and Western Europe so far, but one day I hope to get the chance to visit every continent!

When I heard about the Plus3 Vietnam program, I knew it was the perfect program for me! I have gone through life hearing stories and seeing videos from around the world, but I have never been directly immersed in anything but Western culture. The development of language, culture, and business in Vietnam is fascinating. I am super excited to experience a variety of new traditions, food, and language while learning about the professional world. Traveling to Vietnam is an amazing opportunity to broaden my view personally and professionally! I can’t wait for May 5th and for all the fun, new experiences to come!
