Christopher Ng: Pre-Departure Report

My international experience to date is:

I have traveled to Italy through an educational tour program the summer before my senior year of high school. I went for ten days and visited many locations such as Venice, Rome, Sicily, etc. I attended many tours and learned a lot about the Italian culture during my time on the trip. I have also been to Canada and France, but Italy is the furthest I have been from the United States.

I want to go to China because:

I want to go to China to learn more about the smartphone industry and to learn about a different type of culture. This will also be the first time I visit China, so I am excited to visit where my ancestors are from. It will also be cool to learn about China’s business approach and compare it to the United States’ business culture.

I think the main professional work differences I will experience will be:

I know that China has a different business etiquette than the United States. The main professional differences I will experience will be following the pace of the hosts, respecting people that are older than me no matter their status and having good punctuality. In addition, I think that learning about business in China will help me become more professional in America.

I think the main cultural differences I will experience will be:

I expect to experience some cultural differences while in China. The housing will be smaller than in America. In addition, most Chinese people either follow religions such as Buddhism, Islam, Christianity or Judaism. They celebrate different holidays than we do here. Also, the locals might look at us funny because it will be easy to tell that we are tourists.

I think the main political differences I will experience will be:

There is a large difference between China’s political system and the United States’. We have a democratic system while China have a communist approach to governing the people. The Chinese government is a lot stricter than the U.S. when it comes to controlling the people.

I think the students I meet in my country will be:

The students I meet in my country will be somewhat like students here. However, students in China are really focused on their school work while American students are more relaxed and are involved in lots of extracurricular activities. I do not think I will have trouble making friends with other students I meet in China. The only issue I foresee will be the language barrier, but I am excited to meet new people in a new country.

I think the major differences in living conditions will be:

It will probably be hot in China, so I will be packing short sleeves and shorts. In addition, the hotel rooms are smaller in China. It may be a little cramped, but it will be manageable. The main difference in living conditions will be the size, so I will just have to adjust to less room.

I think the most enjoyable experience I will have during this trip will be:

I think the most enjoyable experience I will have during this trip will be getting to know new people and making unforgettable memories. I have also always wanted to visit the Great Wall and now I finally have the opportunity to! I am also excited to explore the streets of Shanghai and witness China’s city-lifestyle first hand. I cannot wait for this adventure to begin.
