Amaz(ing)on

After a long walk, and arriving at the wrong location, we were able to make our way to Amazon’s office in Dublin. My first impression of Amazon was, ‘this building is very clean and they seem to be hiding something.’ We were told immediately that we could not take photos of ANYTHING. Little do they know, I took a photo of their rug before they yelled at us… oh well. We then had to sign non disclosure agreements and grab a card to show we were guests and so we could get into the building. After being led downstairs we went into a conference room where we had to stay unless we were escorted out (once again, seems like amazon is hiding something…). We were fortunate enough to hear 3 presenters. First, an engineer came in to speak about ‘Alexa’. I found this presentation the most engaging because we were interacting with the actual piece of technology. It was a little frightening hearing about the countless opportunities ‘Alexa’ has to grow. The second presenter, a support operations manager for AWS, spoke about the technology side of AWS and what impact AWS has. I’m not going to lie he lost me for a couple minutes, only because I did not know what he was talking about at parts. It was very interesting when he spoke about the interviewing process and some of the topics they cover. Finally an HR recruiter, Steven, spoke to us about the programs Amazon offers to graduates, and spoke about how big Amazon really is. It was mind boggling to see all of the companies Amazon owns/is a part of. There were about 5 slides worth of companies. I swear Amazon is the government at this point. The craziest fact I heard while there was, if AWS (Amazon web services) in Washington was to go down, 1/3 of the world would lose internet… 1/3!! Finally, we were able to see the 3 month old office space which was quite similar to Googles. The space had a ping pong table, a foosball table, bean bags, a kitchen (with a nice espresso machine), and Amazon games. We were able to see some people working, but there was not a lot of people because the building is so new. Most of the people working seemed fairly young and very relaxed. Overall, Amazon was extremely exciting to visit and I feel like I learned a lot of information about the company that I would not have otherwise known.
