Checking off the Bucket List

Day 11, second to last day in Vietnam and I could not have asked for a better day. Today was about nature and culture, my absolute favorite things. We visited the Mekong Delta and got to do everything I could have asked for from a cultural experience. It began with the boat. We got on a motor boat, sped to an island, ate some crazy fruits, listened to traditional Vietnamese music, and drank the best tea I’ve ever had (and that’s saying a lot because I am a TOTAL tea addict). We walked over to where they made chocolate, saw a greenhouse that my mom would freak over, and got a chance to hold an anaconda around my neck. But wait, it doesn’t stop there. From the snake we went to a honey hut, drank some real organic honey tea, and some even held a beehive. We got back on the boat to go over to another island, drank from a coconut, got to see coconut candy being made (now my new favorite candy), took a horse ride to another street, and THEN the grand finale that’s been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. We got to boat down a river traditional Vietnamese style: sitting down through a tunnel of coconut and palm branches. Absolutely may have been the most incredible thing I’ve done and was one of the most memorable experiences from this trip.

Ok, so that was a lot, but Pitt, I promised I actually learned something from this experience, other than just trying new and crazy things. The Mekong Delta does not have that clear beautiful water that most people dream of. In fact, it is quite the opposite, not being able to see even a couple inches down. The filthy water is probably from the reduced flow of water from the river upstream to keep a constant cycle of new fresh water taken from the north of the Mekong.

I also noticed, which may been just the tour we were on, that there was little to no rice farms that we saw. Instead, we experienced a much wider variety of sources of income from the tropical resources the Mekong Delta provides. Overall, the most incredible day. I loved it so much, and Day 11, I’m counting on you bringing as much joy as it’s my last day here.
