Lasting Effects

Today, May 20th 2018, I am at home writing my last blog post about the Vietnam study abroad trip. After putting in some time and thought about the trip overall, I have realized that I have developed many different transferable skills. My time management skills have improved, my work ethic has increased, and my ability to communicate has improved, including the ability to perceive nonverbal messages. Writing my blog posts have helped to improve my time management skills because I had to figure out when to set aside time from my busy schedule to complete them each day. Later in the trip, I also had to set aside more time to work and prepare for the final presentation. I found that I got better and better with managing this time management task as the trip went on, noticing my overall improvement in this skill. I also noticed my overall work ethic improve during this trip. Due to the traveling and 11 hour time change, I often felt very tired during different parts of the day and usually the afternoon. This challenged my ability to be engaged and work hard to take notes during our company visits or any other task we were doing in the afternoon. I struggled with this a little bit during the first few days of the trip, but noticed a steady improvement in my work ethic throughout the weeks even if I was really tired. Lastly, my ability to communicate over a language barrier improved throughout this trip. Knowing little to no Vietnamese challenged me to communicate with people who did not know English, often times occurring when ordering meals or buying souvenirs from the market. I was able to use different motions and hand gestures to help articulate what I was trying to say. Understanding what the Vietnamese people were trying to tell me took a little more time to figure out. Since many of them did not speak English, they also used different hand gestures which took me a long time to understand. Throughout the two weeks, I was more comfortable with understanding what they were trying to tell me, and it was evident that my communication skills were more developed over time. Even with these transferable skills, I have come a long way with developing many assets that will allow me to be flexible with working in many different jobs in the future, and I could not be more excited with how amazing my experience in Vietnam was!
