Sláinte, Ireland!

Hey everybody, my name is Josh Burgess! I am currently a Junior in the College of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh. I am a Marketing major, and intend on receiving a certificate of Data Analytics as well. I would love to work in a Marketing related field where I can use my creativity and work with a camera and laptop. My previous summer I interned at Logistics Plus, where I was a materials expeditor for WeWork and occasionally Google. Later, they needed help in the WeWork Accounting department and let me finish out my internship in a paid position as an assistant in Accounting. This summer I intend to intern at Animal Productions, who is a media production and publishing group based here in Pittsburgh. They have previously shot commercials for Razor gaming ware, RedBull, and GNC to name a few.

Before I was a Pitt student, I was attended a small school in Harrisburg, PA as a recording arts major. Later, I ended up switching my major to marketing, because I wanted to stay in a creative field. I believe my hobbies and interests are things that can be implemented into a future career in business. I am very involved in fitness in my free time, and would love to continue this through my life. I am about to take my National Academy of Sports and Medicine(NASM) Test to become a certified personal trainer. I have been consecutively lifting at least 3 times a week, lately 6, for a year and a half, and have studied plenty about nutrition on my own as well. As a future goal, I hope to place in Physique Bodybuilding competitions. I am a member of the Pitt Barbell Club on campus as well as the American Marketing Association (AMA). I am loving my time here at Pitt and the life in Pittsburgh. I am living over in Lawrenceville, which is an amazing area with a lot to eat.

I grew up near Erie, Pennsylvania, 2 hours north of Pittsburgh (where the snow comes in piles). This is also where I had met my girlfriend of 4 years, who continues to encourage and inspire me. I grew up living close to my cousins and my grandparents, which told me plenty of stories from their past and their parents. Through this I learned of my heritage, and that one side of my family is from Ireland! Which brings me to say, I am a part of the Plus 3 Transfer Ireland program!

Sláinte, loosely means cheers in Irish Gaelic, but literally translated as health.

I know experiencing Ireland’s cities, history, and business culture will help me grow for the future. It will be an experience that lets me understand another culture’s history first hand and as well as connect it to my families history. The Plus 3 trip will help me grow as a student here at Pitt, I do not know too many other’s outside of my classes because of transferring in, and I feel that this is an opportunity to know some like minded people. After the Ireland trip, we will be able to apply the knowledge of the company site visits and historic sites to class projects and our future careers.
