Guten tag, Augsburg

Hi! I’m Esme Bikales, a freshman in the College of Business Administration here at the University of Pittsburgh. I intend to major in finance and accounting, with a possible minor in economics. I’m from a small town called Maplewood, New Jersey, which is in the suburbs of New York City and about a six-hour drive from the ‘burgh.

I love traveling and have been to Europe a few times, each time loving it more and wanting to come back again. When I was ten, I went to Berlin with my family to see where my grandfather grew up. Since both of my paternal grandparents are from Germany, I feel connected to the country even from across the Atlantic. Considering how young I was, Germany made a strong impression on me. I remember the beautiful and unique architecture and delicious food. I’ve wanted to come back ever since, especially after learning about Germany’s rich history throughout high school. I want to experience Germany and its culture again now that I’m old enough to fully appreciate it. When I heard of Plus 3, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to do so.

I chose Plus 3 because I was amazed to have the opportunity to study abroad so early in my college career. I specifically chose the Germany program because of its focus on the auto industry. I’ve been interested in the industry for years now, partially since I grew up in a family with deep ties to General Motors. There is no better place to pursue that interest than Germany. I’m excited to understand what makes Germany the one of the most advanced producers of cars and learn what their innovation can teach us about the general business world.

It’s hard to believe that I’ll be in Germany a month from now. I can’t wait to meet lots of new people and embark on new experiences. See you in Augsburg!
