Hello, I am Calvin Spiteri, a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh. I am pursuing majors in Finance and Business Information Systems with a certificate in Data Analytics. During my first year, I have been an active student in and outside the classroom. Academically, I spend most of my time in Sennott Square or the Hillman Library. My extracurricular activities outside the classroom include being on the university club men’s volleyball team and serving as coordinator for the team clothing. I also have recently joined the Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity which helps aid students in professional development. In addition, I am a part of the Honors Living Learning Community in Sutherland Hall. Living with like-minded students who strive to excel academically and create social change has been a wonderful experience.
I chose to study in South Korea for many reasons and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to study abroad this summer. I’ve never been to any Asian countries and would love to indulge in learning a different culture. I am so excited to visit the Royal and Gyeongbokgung Palaces, Jogyessa Temple, and Bukchon Hanok Village. I’ve seen many pictures and read background information about these historical sites, but I can’t wait to see them in person. I am also really interested in visiting some of the universities in Korea. It’ll be very cool to see the similarities and differences with the University of Pittsburgh. As well, I am interested in visiting the DMZ, as I have always wondered what it is really like. As I mentioned before, I’m excited to be introduced to a new culture and place that I have never been to. It’ll be very eye opening to see the culture in South Korea and how it compares to the United States. With the culture, I am also interested in learning the history of Korea and trying their cuisine.
Another reason I chose South Korea is the area of study. As a Business Information Systems major with a certificate in Data Analytics, I am fascinated with how South Korea uses information technology. South Korea is one of the major leaders in the use of information technology in business and society. The business culture will definitely be something different that I have never experienced before, and I cannot wait to experience this.
Studying abroad in South Korea will be an amazing opportunity to experience a new culture with my fellow students. I can’t wait to see all the historical sites, universities, and companies. But most of all, I am excited to form new friendships through amazing experiences with my fellow classmates.
