Day 1: A Flight Across the World

After almost 5 months, the long-awaited journey has finally come upon us and it begins at 3 am on Saturday morning. As we boarded the bus at 4 in the morning, it finally began to hit me that we were leaving to go to South Korea, but we had a long trip ahead of us. When we got to the airport we got our boarding passes and got our bags checked for the flight the airports, and then went through security. After we found our gate, some of us went to get a small breakfast to begin the day, so I got a breakfast sandwich from Chick-Fil-A. Our first flight was at 7 and took us from Pittsburgh to Dallas. After landing in Dallas we had to find our way to the correct terminal for our next flight to Seoul and had a short layover of a little over an hour. The next part of the trip was the toughest as we had a 14-hour flight to Seoul. I knew it was going to be hard because this was my first time flying for longer than 3 hours. Luckily, I got to sit next to some of my classmates during the flight. During the flight, I followed my plan of watching movies and trying to sleep to pass the time. After watching one movie and eating the first meal given to us, I was able to get some sleep for a little while. The meals on the plane were definitely not the best but that was expected. The flight overall was not as bad as I expected and after a few movies, some below average food, and a little bit of sleep the flight was already coming to an end. As we landed and got off the plane in Korea, I knew that the excitement of this journey has just begun. After going through customs and getting our bags, we meet some of our tour guides and members of the Asia Institute who will be going along with us and helping us along the way. Then we took a bus to our hotel in Seoul, but had to walk in the end as a festival shut down some of the streets. We ended the first day by going to dinner at a traditional Korean restaurant where they gave each group many different types of Korean food so we each could try some. After we finished eating we had our program orientation and went back to the hotel to get some rest after the long day.
