History Lesson in Gyeongju

Today we had a full day of cultural visits planned for us as we were going to tour around Gyeongju to visit many historical places. After a good night sleep, we woke up around 7:15 and got ready before we went down to get breakfast in the hotel and then meet up to go out for the day. Our first stop of the day after a short drive was to the Daereungwon tomb complex. While here we saw the Cheonmachong Tomb, which was excavated in 1973 and they found the grave in addition to a gold crown and many other relics. They preserved they original tomb but created a display within a different tomb in which we could go inside and see what it was like.

After this we went to the Cheomseongdae observatory, which is one of the most valuable and famous cultural heritage in South Korea. Following this we got back on the bus to drive to Gyeongju National Museum. While we were here, we got a tour and free time to see some of the amazing artifacts and learn about the history from the Silla Dynasty. Then it was time for lunch before we visited a few more spots. At lunch we got to try a bunch of different Korean foods which was really good. After lunch we went to visit the Anapji Pond which was really amazing and peaceful. As we walked around the bond we could see all the history and scenery that remains from the past. Our next stop was to a Buddhist Temple all the way on top of a mountain. After a bus ride up the mountain we had to walk a mile or so to the Buddhist Temple which was really crowded because it was Buddha’s Birthday. It was a really cool experience to see the history and design of the temple, in addition to the view from the top of the mountain. We had one last stop where we walked around another Buddhist temple which was cool before we got back on the bus to go to the hotel. It was another great day and amazing to see some of the historic cultural sites from Korea’s past.
