Entry #1: First Day Abroad

On the first day of the trip we left for the Great Wall at 8 am. Before we left for the wall, we got the all-inclusive breakfast and it was incredible. There was a wide arrangement of food from fried rice to pork and chicken dumplings. Along with the food there were a ton of good drinks including grapefruit and orange juice. After breakfast we met our guide Uncle Joe on the way to the wall. Looking out the window on the way to the Great Wall we saw the beautiful   country. They were setting up a bullet train for the two-thousand and twenty-two winter Olympics because the traffic in Beijing makes it too difficult to drive to the stadiums. Then we took a shuttle and had to walk up the mountain to the Great Wall. This walk was extremely difficult and made me quite sick and I ended up throwing up off the side of the Great Wall. Besides this incident the Great Wall was spectacular. The view of the mountains and the valley was one of the best views I have seen in my life. We ran into a group from West Virginia that was similar to our plus3 group. They were a group of freshmen and they caught our attention when they were singing Country Road by John Denver. After we walked around on the Great Wall, we took the toboggan slide down and it was extremely fun. We were constantly reminded to slow down by the staff, but we did not listen. After visiting the great wall, we took a bus ride to the Summer Palace. On the way to the Summer Palace Joe explained the story behind the Summer Palace and the Dragon Lady. She staged a coup against the Emperor and gained power. She appointed her son as Emperor to maintain her power and after he died at nineteen. After her son died, she appointed her three-year-old nephew to be Emperor so she could keep leading the country. The Dragon Lady had the Summer Palace renovated and the Marble Boat built. When we visited, we walked the longest corridor in the world at seven hundred and sixty meters long. There were beautiful paintings of the scenery around the palace on the corridor. The corridor had a beautiful view of the lake and there were a ton of peddle boats on the water. After we walked the corridor, we saw the marble boat. It was two stories and stained glass in the windows. After we visited the Summer Palace, we went back to the center of Beijing and got dinner. We got dinner at a restaurant called the Hot Pot and they served the food in a very different way. They had a boiling pot of water and served raw meat that you put in the pot till the meat was cooked and then eat it with a peanut sauce and a spicy sauce. Overall, the first day in Beijing was incredible and I had a wonderful time.
