Today was another day full of company visits. We first headed over to Amcham, the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Whereas most of the visits so far have been from Chinese natives, the people we talked to were actually expats, so it was cool to get to hear a viewpoint of the Chinese market and the U.S.-China relations from people who have lived both sides of it. We had a very in depth and interesting conversation about the Chinese Economic Miracle, how changing politics influenced the development of the economy, the transition in Chinese culture as they continue to be a forefront and the world stage, and so many other topics. Our two hosts were extremely knowledgeable, and I think everyone can agree it was one of the best visits we had on the entire trip. Even though I’m not a business major, and didn’t necessarily know all the terminology and concepts they were talking about, I feel like I learned so much. We headed to lunch and afterwards went to see Horiba, a Japanese company that specializes in the design and manufacturing of precision instruments for measurement and analysis. All of us engineers were excited for this particular visit, as we got to go on a site tour and see the all the production, testing, and manufacturing areas on site. We got to learn a bit on how they, as a business, continue to corner and hold the majority of the market for these specific yet very important products. Things such as blood testing, motor vehicle testing, environmental analysis, etc. are all dependent on the tools Horiba manufactures. Finally having gotten to see some of the more nitty gritty, the engineers got back on the bus happy with he day. Me and some of the girls then ventured out after returning to the hotel to find some dinner, and afterwards finally got our long awaited Dairy Queen and accidentally a Detective Pikachu fan.
