Hallo! Willkommen! My name is Daniel Schaub, and I am very excited to have the chance to share my Plus3 Germany experience with you!
Unlike the common charateristic at Pitt of being “from 40 minutes outside of Philly”, I travelled about only 25 minutes from home to get here. I was born here in Oakland and have lived in the North Hills of Pittsburgh for my entire life. I actually almost ended up being 7 hours away from home at Purdue University, but in the days leading up to the deadline, I decided that Pitt was the better choice for me. I’m happy to say that I have not regretted that decision one bit. Here at Pitt, I am in the Swanson School of Engineering pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. Also, next semester, I will begin to take courses for my Architecture Design minor.
Leaving all of the school stuff aside, I am enjoying Pitt from a social and personal aspect too. Last semester, I joined ASCE, which is a professional society for civil engineers, and Italian Club. I’m always open to finding new clubs and trying new things. In my free time, you can almost ALWAYS catch me listening to music. (I’m not kidding. If you see me on campus, I’ll have AirPods in 99% of the time.) Alternative rock and pop are my favorite genres, but I listen to a wide range of music (except most rap and hardcore country) and love to analyze lyrics. Also, I’ve been playing the piano since first grade and have just recently started teaching myself guitar (which is going surprisingly well, despite previous failed attempts).
As stated in the title of this post, Plus3 Germany will be my first time venturing outside of US borders! Coming into college, I knew that I wanted to study abroad to get my first experience of exploring a new culture. When I heard about the Plus3 program, I knew instantly that it was a perfect fit. I did not want to be gone too long while studying abroad, so a two week length is ideal. Additionally, I am an indecisive person, so I liked how I had the chance to rank my top three choices and the program leaders decided the location for me. With that being said, I’m happy that I ended up being accepted into the Germany program because my ancestors on my dad’s side are from Germany. During this program, I hope to learn more about their culture, their everyday customs, and the place they called home. Professionally, I am excited to gain the real-world experience of exploring the exquisite and precise German automobile engineering and manufacturing process. I additionally hope to learn how to properly conduct myself and succeed in professional situations.
Thank you for reading all about me. I am thrilled to start sharing my experiences in Germany with you in May!
Auf Wiedersehen!
