Costa Rica’s apparent focus on their sustainability definitely makes them seem more progressive and cooler. They seem hip because they care more about the environment given their passion for sustainable practices. According to my research, they are actually ranked the second most sustainable country in the world. They get their title from using mainly renewable energy sources . They’ve gone far lengths to try and restore their forests and wildlife through creating national parks and conducting conservation projects.
Costa Rica’s government has a lot to do with their clean policies. They have a decarbonization plan that will grow their economy while decreasing their use of fossil fuels simultaneously. Although it’s an ambitious goal, the president says it’s nothing they aren’t capable of. With the electrification of transport, clean waste management, and sustainable agriculture, it’ll be doable. Coffee and bananas are included in this practice of sustainable agriculture, considering it’s some of their biggest industries.
I am looking forward to experiencing Costa Rica because of the culture and beauty it has to offer. I’ve seen countless pictures of cloud hikes through the rainforests and shimmering pools at the bottoms of waterfalls. Taking Spanish for 8 years also ingrained an interest in countries like Costa Rica. I knew I needed to see and experience it for myself, though. I also can’t wait to try the fresh fruits and authentic dishes because we don’t get quite the same flavors here in the U.S.
