Off to Germany! (May 7-8, 2022)

The first day of Plus3 was very eventful despite only being a travel day. We first got on the plane to Charlotte, NC on which a lady took my seat claiming that she got a text from delta that her seat had been moved, despite the fact that we were flying American Airlines. I got to move to her seat closer to the front of the plane which had extra leg room and there was a cat in my row so I was very happy. We then got off our plane and headed to our next terminal to get on our flight to Munich. I had Wendy’s chicken nuggets for lunch. We then got on our plane to Munich which was promptly (2 hours later) grounded at JFK due to “radar issues”. We then sat in the JFK airport, but we weren’t too bored thanks to Steph leading us in some stretches! We finally got on our plane to Munich after what felt like an eternity. I fell asleep on the plane so the flight did not feel very long. We landed in Munich and finally got through customs and got our bags and we were off to Augsburg!

When we got to the hotel, two of the German students were there to give us a presentation, but we apparently looked so tired and hungry that they suggested we go get food. We ended up getting McDonalds, so my first meal in Germany was chicken nuggets and fries. We came back and had a short overview of the program followed by a very short trip to our hotel rooms before heading off to the Fuggerei.
The Fuggerei tour of the social housing for the city was incredibly interesting. Actually getting to step foot in one of the houses that people have lived in for hundreds of years and learn about what their day to day lives looked like was such an immersive historical experience.
From the Fuggerei we went to get dinner with the students from Augsburg that will be working with us on this trip. I got the cheese noodles for dinner, which was the German version of Mac and cheese with caramelized onions. I noticed that the food tasted more organic, like it had less artificial flavoring in it. We talked for the entire dinner about everything from night life in Germany to politics in the U.S. After dinner I was so tired from being awake for the last 30 hours that I went back to the hotel and fell right asleep after showering.
