Germany day 1

After almost 14 hours of non-stop flights, we finally arrived in Munich, Germany. The first thing that immediately struck me about this nation is how colorful it is. There were endless fields of bright yellow rapeseeds (which are used to make canola oil) and waves of blue solar panels lining the highways as we traveled to Augsburg. Trees lined the roads all the way to the city, and once inside it the varying vibrant colors of the houses made the city shine. Even the color of the German taxis were different to their American counterparts (beige in contrast to yellow American taxis).

When we arrived at Augsburg I could not help but notice how walkable the city was. Instead of having asphalt roads all around the city for cars to use, Augsburg has beautiful brick/stone walkways to encourage biking/walking around town. They even have tram lines all throughout the city for the local trains to pick up and drop off citizens, just like how Pitt has bus stops for the Port Authority buses to do the same thing there. The city even has a place dedicated to playing pool, darts, and other such activities that makes Nordy’s place back at Pitt look like a daycare.

Finally, we toured the Fuggerei lofts. What really struck me about these lofts was the underground bunker that was used in WWII during the aerial bombings of Augsburg. It really opened my eyes to the significance of the war on this city and how the destruction caused by it allowed for the unique buildings with simple architecture to be constructed in its wake. All in all I had a great day and can not wait until tomorrow!
