Today we had a packed and insightful bunch of activities! We started off with an Engineering lecture given by Karel Bockstael who was the previous vice president of sustainability at KLM. We learned about sustainable energy, and how to make aircrafts more sustainable. Some substitutes for kerosene which is currently the fuel used in planes are biofuel and batteries. Another way to make flight more efficient was to take more layovers which makes the flights shorter. This resonated with me because when looking at supply chains, it is very important to look at all aspects such as what products are used, harms of the products and the most efficient products that can be used. He was very insightful and I learn a lot through this lecture.
Our next activity was a fault in our stars scavenger hunt all around the city of Amsterdam with our teams. We ended up visiting different scenes from the movie such as the bench,Peter van Houten’s house, the American hotel, the Rijksmuseum and a significant bus stop. While these locations were not right near, it allowed me to see many parts of the beautiful city that I have not experienced yet. We entered cute little neighborhoods while also seeing major tourist attractions.
Finally, we visited the Anne Frank House. We were able to listen through a walking tour and see all the history of Anne Frank’s story and diaries. We learned history about the holocaust, the secret annex and her passion for writing. When I was walking up the stairs into the secret annex and was able to see parts of the home where she along with family stayed for about two years, I really felt a connection to her story. There were replicas of what the home looked like with furniture in it and even pieces of her work that were saved over time. I was very grateful to have this opportunity to learn about her experience. The diverse set of activities today allowed me to explore so much about Amsterdam and I cannot wait to learn more in the upcoming days!
