Bridging the Gap Between Concept and Consumer

Today, we went to see the world’s first 3D printed bridge. It was printed by MX3D. The bridge was a very interesting design because it was 3D printed, so there were many factors to consider when creating the bridge. After seeing the bridge to give us a visual, we traveled to the MX3D company to listen to a more in-depth presentation.

When using 3D printing technology, there are a number of benefits. The first is flexibility. With the advanced technology, they have the ability to make bigger and more complex shapes. The next advantage is speed, as it can work 3 times faster than power-bed AM. The costs are another benefit. Finally, the 3D printing machines are easy to use.

MX3D mainly works with other companies in various industries to create parts for them. Design is the first thing to consider when moving a product along from concept to consumer. There are many things to consider: material, size, durability, functionality, etc. Something unique about the MX3D bridge is that it has sensors that can sense the amount of people/weight that is on the bridge. After they plan the design of the bridge, the next thing to consider is the feasibility of printing it. Then, they take print parameter settings and toolpath planning into account. Next on the supply chain comes the metal printing. While the product is printing, they must control and monitor the processes to ensure nothing goes wrong. Finally, the report must be printed. We got to see some of their printed work, and it was very neat. My favorite project to look at was the big dog statue.

For dinner we went to a family goat farm. We had peanut soup, chips, pickled vegetables, spicy rice, and a hard boiled egg. For dessert, we had a strawberry ice cream dessert with whipped cream. It was a good cultural experience, as we were able to see a little bit of what a family meal would be like in the Netherlands. However, I was not the biggest fan of the food. It was good, but some of it was a little spicy for my appetite.
