Czech Education on a European Vacation

Education in the Czech Republic has been quite the experience. Being abroad, I have noticed multiple differences between the colleges here in Prague versus the University of Pittsburgh. The Lectures we have attended here so far have been very informative on many topics discussing the history, language, and industrial culture of the country. Additionally, the teaching methods used by the instructor are very similar to the professors at Pitt as they can be very engaging.

While the experience of the lectures was great, the way the universities operate here are even more intriguing. One thing that our tour guide mentioned is that there really isn’t any centralized location for the campus. While there seems to be a main building in the city for primary usage of the school, many other lecture halls are spread across the city limits. This almost makes the campus of the university the city of Prague itself. It was also interesting to hear how cheap it can be to go to a public school in Europe. I was always aware that many countries around here treated education as a public service, rather than a paid fee of many figures. Ultimately, the schools here don’t seem to have as much of an identity and school pride as Pitt does, but that also doesn’t mean that an expensive tuition is better than free education.
