Today we toured a power plant!
First, we toured the plant and learned about how it works to supply power to the country. The plant has been around for a long time, but has changed with the advancement of technology and environmental concerns. The plant utilizes brown coal and water from the Elbe River and the Všechlapy basin. The plant will produce enough power to supply the country with roughly three years of consumption.
After touring the plant itself, we headed over to the coal mine. This part was my favorite, as we were taken by truck down into the depths of the open air mine. We were in the lowest point in the Czech Republic, and saw remains of middle age era mine tunnels! The machines were unimaginably massive and I felt like an ant standing in the middle of the mine. We wore hard hats and searched the area for fools gold to bring home. This was one of the coolest opportunities I’ve had as I would never had known how interesting this experience was if not for this program!
While at the plant we were also provided with a delicious lunch. I tried a bit of everything and, my favorite part, there was an endless supply of coca cola!
We were all exhausted after the trip and slept the whole way back to the city. For dinner we got some street food and I tried traditional Czech halusky. I’ve grown up eating halusky my whole life, but it was exciting to try it straight from Prague!
After dinner we all headed to the black light theater for a show! Although it was a bit odd, the performance was unique and funny and I’m really glad I got to see some of the theater culture while here. Tonight the group is going out for some drinks and I can’t wait to continue the trip with a visit to the town of Kutna Hora tomorrow!
