Dachau is a Nazi concentration camp located near Munich. It was the longest running concentration camp, established in 1933 and liberated by the allies in April of 1945. The camp, unlike many others, was not intended as a death camp, but rather a forced labor camp for political opponents of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist party. The camp is particularly significant because of its location. Munich was important politically for Hitler during the years leading up to World War 2. Many prisoners (41,500 approximately) died at Dachau. It was a very sad place but definitely necessary to see so that we never forget what happened there.
The key takeaway from today is that we must never let these tragedies happen again. History can be uncomfortable and sad, but we must never censor it and never forget. It is important to learn from history so that we do not repeat it.
