Local Czech Customs

My favorite Czech custom is the polite respect with which they treat each meeting. When one Czech walks into a store, greets an acquittance or in any way meets in a formal setting the person is expected to say, “Dobry den”. It is the formal way to greet someone, and it means “Good day”. The other person can then respond with “dekuji, dobry den” which means “Thanks, Good day”. The word “Prosim” is another great Czech word that they pepper their sentences with to be respectful of one another. It can mean “your welcome”, “please”, “pardon” or something else depending on the context. Those three words together give the vibe that the Czechs are very polite. I like it because it sets the stage for respectful interactions, and it reminds me of home with our “please” and “thank you”.
