This morning we headed off to Griffith College for the last time! We first had a lecture with a man named Rob Cullen on networking. Rob discussed networking styles, the importance of this skill, and some tips and tricks he has learned through his years. For example, we discussed some small details such as wearing your name badge on the shoulder of the hand you will use when giving a handshake, so that your name is prominently displayed as well. More specifically, Rob discussed networking in Ireland versus the way some foreign countries conduct business. In Ireland it is vital to treat networking events as ways to connect with people and form relationships on a more personal level, and never discuss business. Essentially you are selling a cup of coffee with yourself, and then at that point you may begin to delve into business. Although this is not dramatically different from the United States, there is a bit more of a fast pased business focused environment at networking events back home. Rob also discussed the importance of the way one stands, and making sure that if you would like to be approached you stand in a way that leaves your circle or conversation slightly more open. Most importantly we discussed the power of LinkedIn. Thankfully my LinkedIn account seems to be up to standards, but it is vital to ensure you are constantly active and updating it.
After Rob Cullens presentation we had a break for lunch and then began our final presentations. I was so excited to get this over with! My group was able to present on our findings from the site visit to Thinkhouse and get some feedback on ways to deal with our final paper. Overall I feel that it went well and I loved getting to listen to the other groups and get a refresher on their companies as well.
