Day 12: Salzburg, Austria

It was a super exciting, yet sad day today as it is our free day and we were going to Salzburg, Austria. However, it is our final day and we will be flying home early tomorrow morning.

Because we had to catch the train around 7:30 this morning, we were up early and eating breakfast in the hotel before we had to go. We all walked over to the train station to buy our tickets. We were really lucky to have Tim and Brian joining us, who are German Students, as they were super helpful with showing us how to buy our train tickets and where we needed to be.

Once we got our tickets, we headed to our platform to get on the train. Because it was a special German holiday, the train was packed and some of us didn’t have a seat going to Munich to catch our connection train.

Of course once we got into Munich, we had to get more food before getting on our next train. So I got a little salami sandwich to hold me over for a little. When it was time to get on our train, we were even more unlucky and there were even less seats to sit on. Luckily, I was able to sit for half of the two hour train ride. The scenery on our trip to Salzburg was amazing. There were small and unique looking farms, along with the beautiful mountains in the background.

Getting into Salzburg I immediately noticed the massive fortress on the top of the mountain and knew we needed to go there. Although, getting off the train we had a little walk to get into the more touristy and historical part of the city. As a snack, we stopped and ate some gelato. I got a Nutella flavor which was definitely the best one.

We continued our walk and came across the castle with a beautiful garden in the back. We spent a long time in the garden walking around a taking pictures. My favorite part about it was probably the live music being played which gave a super peaceful atmosphere. Unfortunately, we got to the music just at the end and only got to listen to one song.

So, we continued our walk and went into a few different little stores. One of my favorites was this candy store where I bought bubblegum soda. For some reason I thought this was a good idea but it was disgusting and I only took a couple of sips.

Right before we went to the fortress, we decided to stop and get some doner kebab. Once again, it did not disappoint and it was so good. If I hadn’t of blown all my money on the trip already I would’ve bought another.

We finally made it to the bottom of the hill where the fortress was. We were able to get discounted tickets as a group to get to the top of the hill which was super lucky. The way we got up was an incline which was way faster than the Duquesne Incline in Pittsburgh.

At the top of the hill the view was absolutely amazing. We were able to see the entire city from there. We took a bunch of pictures but none of them could do the view justice as it was unreal to see.

We then walked inside the fortress and went though a few museums on the inside. They had super cool artifacts from the time the fortress was being used. My favorite was probably the cannons which were setup outside a hole in the side of the wall.

After the fortress, we went and got dinner at an Italian restaurant. I got tortellini with prosciutto on top. It was a great meal to end our last day and I was so happy that we had the opportunity to travel to another country while in Europe.

Concluding our dinner, we made our way back to the train station to head home and get packed up for the early 4 o’clock wake up to catch our flight.
