Today, we had a presentation from Tony’s Chocolonely. The presentation was from Joke, an inspire to actress at Tony’s. We learned about their open chain model. With this, they have five sourcing principles. The first principle is traceable beans. It is important to have a clear idea of who produces the beans, so it is possible to determine the social circumstances of production. The next principle is higher prices. While a higher price can potentially drive customers away, charging a premium price allows farmers to earn a living income. This is very important to ensure the business can continue to run. Another principle is strong farmers. It is essential to collaborate to increase professionalism in farming cooperatives to allow them to change inequalities. The next sourcing principle is productivity and quality. While productivity and quality is important, they should not use child labor to achieve this. It is paramount that the farmers collaborate with each other to find better strategies. Joke was so kind to give us chocolate bars to try! I don’t really like chocolate, but I tried the white chocolate raspberry, and I enjoyed it.
Next, we got to go to the Tony’s Chocolonely Superstore. There was a station for you to create your own chocolate bar. I didn’t make one, but it did look very cool. There were also so many chocolate bar flavors to choose from. It reminded me a little of Hershey’s Chocolate World.
Finally, we had our farewell dinner at Desa. We had Indonesian food. I had rice, beef, chicken, and vegetables. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the food. After the peanut soup, I have been cautiously optimistic about the food each time. I’m so glad that this restaurant was so delicious. It was a great meal to end on, and it’s perfect because Indonesian culture is important in the Netherlands.
After dinner, I went with Kayla to go get Stroopwafels at Van Wonderen. It was my second time going, and it did not disappoint. I’m so sad that today was our last day, but I think everyone is ready to go home. I am so happy that everyone was able to get to know each other on this trip. Most of these people, especially the engineers, are people I would’ve probably never met at Pitt, so I’m glad that I got this opportunity!
Thank you to Frank and Dr. Bursic! I know everyone appreciates all that you have done for us on this trip!
Doei!
