I can’t believe it is our last day in the Netherlands. I started it off with a bike ride this morning, which was scary at first but a lot of fun! We went to get breakfast at a bagel shop and got to ride along the water on pour way there. Being in the Netherlands, I had to try biking here and loved getting to participate in their culture. Then Joke from Tony’s Chocolonely came to speak to us about the sustainability and goals of the company. When looking into the supply chain of producing cocoa, we overlook the farmers ages, wages and work loads. They have made sure that the cocoa they use in their chocolate bars uses no illegal work, trace the beans and they also pay a permium so that the farmers can make enough money for a living. I love how even though it may be more difficult and less profitable, Tony’s goals and morals are shown through the company and they never go against them. Tony’s also creates awareness about this issue by telling a story rather than just selling chocolate. I hope many companies are able to focus on sustainability this much in their work and not just on profit. Joke and her son then handed us some chocolate bars before we headed out to the Tony’s Super Store.
The store had many different flavors and we were even able to see through a glass the bars being produced. This experience will definitely have me think more before I just buy products. I loved knowing that the bar I was buying did not come from child labor or people who do not recieve a living income. We then headed over to our last group dinner at an Indonesian restaurant where we had many types of chicken and rice. It was nice to have one last meal with everyone. Between making new friends, the beautiful sights, delicious food and all of the experiences, I had an amazing time here in the Netherlands and look forward to seeing everybody around. Doei!
