Hi everyone! My name is Meghan Pohl and I am a student at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering, where I plan to major in Chemical Engineering. Additionally, I am interested in pursuing either the Sustainability Certificate or the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Certificate at Pitt. I am from Cranberry Township, PA which is about 40 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. Outside of school, I like to relax by reading, running, and occasionally rock climbing! During the colder months, I also love to ski.
This summer, I am excited to be a part of Plus 3 Cyprus. Throughout my studies in high school and at the University of Pittsburgh, I have become fascinated by how scientific advancements and engineering can impact people on a societal and political level. During Plus 3, we will get the opportunity to talk to professionals in numerous different industries, like IT and gaming companies, such as Wargaming Group Limited, as well as pharmaceutical companies, like Medochemie. I am interested in learning how these companies adapt to emerging scientific advancements, such as AI, while still prioritizing their corporate ethics and the customer’s needs.
I was also drawn to Cyprus because of its rich history. Cyprus sits in a unique location within the Mediterranean and is a connecting island between Europe, Asia, and Africa. I’ve learned that many different people throughout history have left their cultural mark on Cyprus, which is still evident in the art, architecture, and language there today. I’m excited to see the ancient mosaics and medieval castles that are still standing in Cyprus today!
I am very thankful for the opportunity to travel this summer to Cyprus through Pitt’s Plus 3 program. I hope the experience will allow me to grow personally, academically, and professionally.
