Introduction- Riley Scott

Hello, my name is Riley Scott, and I am from Downingtown, PA and am a freshman in the business school. One of my greatest desires is to travel, so I am very excited for the opportunity to travel while not only learning more about business but also the culture. In my free time I also enjoy working out, reading, and hanging out with my friends. For my academic plan I am pursuing a dual degree in finance and actuarial mathematics. There are multiple organizations on campus that I am involved in including Women in Business (WIB) and Smart Women Securities (SWS). Starting this summer for SWS, I will be one of the sector heads of the organization which means I am heavily involved in the investment process.

After I graduate, my current plan is to become an actuarial on the financial side of the field. In order to achieve this I am hoping to secure internships for the summers after my sophomore and junior years. Some steps to take to get an internship is keeping my GPA high with above a 3.5, keep getting leadership positions in clubs, and continue getting involved on campus. I have already gotten involved with the business school, an example being the Plus 3 program.

The Plus 3 program location I am attending is Cyprus. The focus of this location is Supply Chain Management. We will visit multiple different companies that focus on this area of study that will help me continue to develop my knowledge. I will also become more comfortable talking to potential employers. During these company visits, I will learn more about the skills I will need in my future career. Personally, I am very excited to learn more about Cyprus by seeing the cultural sites, eating the food, and exploring the cities. I’m looking forward to becoming better friends with all the other students in the program as well!

Important take-aways from the pre-departure activities:

  • The most simple steps of supply chain management: producer → distributor → wholesaler (optional) → consumer
  • The business culture of Cyprus: more formal, the importance of relationships, and the importance of food
  • Cyprus is in between the 3 continents of Africa, Europe, and Asia which made it a desirable colony, so in its history it has changed leadership many times before finally gaining its independence in 1960.
