My name is Jocelyn Boyd and I’m from the state of Pennsylvania. I’m currently pursuing my BSN at the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland. I am involved in the Nursing Student Association (NSA) and served on the Formal Committee. I am an active member of the Nursing Living Learning Community (LLC) and serve as the Advocacy Chair of Lothrop Hall through the Resident Student Association (RSA). I work as a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) at both Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) and Redstone Highlands Senior Living. I am involved in the Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program (URMP) through the School of Nursing and I’m focused on healthcare policy research on integrating more Nurse Practitioners into professional healthcare settings. Also, I am pursuing a Global Health Certificate and Honors Distinction. I love spending time outdoors and relaxing with friends and family. I regularly participate in Pitt’s group fitness classes.
I am excited for the Plus3 United Kingdom program in May. My family roots are primarily from this region of the world, so I am looking forward to experiencing the culture myself. I will be learning about the intersectionality that exists between the healthcare and educational systems for children. I have a special interest in pediatrics hoping to be a primary care pediatric Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in the future. In addition, my family members are mostly educators and nurses so this important connection between education and healthcare has always been a special symbiotic relationship in my life. This unique opportunity will allow me to compare the systems between the UK and the US while also forming global relationships with experienced educators and professional healthcare workers. Touring the hospitals observing first-hand the UK healthcare system in action will enable me to be more aware of improvements that could be made to enhance patient outcomes. While my studies will be mostly at Birmingham City University, I am hoping to spend time soaking up the local atmosphere. High tea, fish and chips, London Bridge, Buckingham Palace, and Big Ben are all things I am eager to check off my bucket list.
