Hello, my name is Jasmine Carpio. I am a sophomore student in the School of Nursing. I inspire to pursue graduate school to become a CRNA. Currently, I also pursuing a minor in Spanish and I am involved in the university’s research program. I am engaged in work relating to the integration of NPs in geriatric primary care. Personally, I am from Long Island, New York. I live with my mom, dad, sister, brother, and my dog, Maggie. My family is partially from Ecuador, while the other half is from Poland. In addition, during my free time, I love to play video games or watch shows with friends and family.
The program I chose was Argentina because unfortunately, I grew up without constant contact with my abuelos. As a result of growing up detached from Latin American culture, I feel largely disconnected from my roots as a Latina. Hence, through this study abroad program, I hope to take a step closer to my identity as an Ecuadorian. In addition, as I intend to pursue a minor in Spanish, I want to use this study abroad program to improve my proficiency in the language and understand the cultural ramifications of pursuing a minor in a second language.
Furthermore, there is a the lack of bilingual medical professionals in the hospitals near my home. While interning at a hospital on Long Island, I learned the importance of using a patient’s first language to transform a hospital setting into a place of comfort. Through my interning experience, I formulated an understanding of the importance of learning from experiences. Hence, through Argentinian study abroad, I hope to compare healthcare in the United States to Latin American healthcare, while simultaneously building a stronger foundation to care for my patients. In addition, I am engaged in research on health policy; hence, through this program, I hope to build my understanding of the impact on policy on the healthcare system, further from the US.
