Learning that Costa Rica is consistently one of the most sustainable countries in the world is quite impressive. Given this consistent sustainability pattern in Costa Rica, I believe that this country can be viewed as an example and inspiration to other countries looking to practice sustainable methods. Since Costa Rica is such a small country, it can often be overlooked. This makes their admirable sustainability even more remarkable!
One outstanding sustainability initiative that Costa Rica practices is capping the use of carbon dioxide emissions and using renewable energy instead. In 2017, Costa Rica set a record by running only on renewable energy for 300 days. Costa Rica has initiated a plan to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050! Another major sustainability initiative practiced by Costa Rica is that more than 25% of the whole country’s land is protected, creating an abundance of national parks and reserves. There are over 160 national parks in Costa Rica.
I am excited to go to Costa Rica, as this program was a contributing factor as to why I chose Pitt! When I found out Costa Rica was an option for Plus3, I knew I wanted to go. I love learning about things that are not often thought about, so I am excited to learn all about the supply chains of all different products, like coffee and bananas, while there. After researching Costa Rica’s sustainability, it makes me even more eager to go and learn more about these practices!
