Introduction – Shamus O’Grady

Hello everyone! My name is Shamus O’Grady and I am a first year nursing student and pursuing a minor in Hispanic Language and Culture. I am from Bethel, CT and have loved every minute spent in Pittsburgh. I am the PR Chair for SEMS at Pitt, along with being an active member of the Nursing Student Association. After obtaining my BSN, I hope to work in the emergency department while potentially pursuing a Masters in Public Health at some point in life.

You can always find me looking for new cafes or restaurants to go and try with my friends, or just wandering around the streets of Oakland. When I’m not in Pittsburgh, I work at my local garden center designing different landscapes and selling trees and shrubs, so I love being outdoors. I also serve as a volunteer EMT with Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. I also love spending time with my two twin golden retrievers and constantly surrounding myself with friends and family.

I am ecstatic to be a part of the Plus3 Argentina Study Abroad group for this year. Going on an international trip has been something at the top of my bucket list for a very long time, so when this opportunity was introduced to us in the fall, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. With my interest in public health, I am super excited to see how the Argentine healthcare system operates, and find the strengths and weaknesses of each sector we explore. I am also super excited to be immersed in the Argentine culture, and be able to practice Spanish in a native speaking country. I think that I will learn a lot about the components that make up a proper functioning healthcare system, and different policies or procedures that play into their success. By having the opportunity to speak with locals and learn about their culture and history will also be super rewarding, and develop more interpersonal communication skills and overall cultural sensitivity that can be applied throughout the rest of my life.
