Day 1: A Surprising Welcome

Today was our first day in Vietnam. I couldn’t believe the warm welcome we received from UEF. They played music, gave us leis, and cheered for us as we walked into the college. The energy and vibrance of the meeting felt very different from the way we welcome guests in the US. Another clear cultural difference appeared in the way our meals were served. Rather than handing out individual orders, the waiters would set dishes on the table to be shared. I enjoyed this style as I got to try a lot of new foods.

Vietnam is a rapidly growing country and Ho Chi Minh seems to be under fast development. Massive office buildings sat empty as they were recently completed. They’re still waiting for companies to move in and claim them. During the tour, I was surprised by the number of luxury stores like Louis Vuitton and Rolex in the town square. It seems like there is a large rich population in the city. Many roads and sidewalks were under renovation and our tour guide explained that the government is trying to improve roads to decrease traffic. The streets were packed with motorbikes which are the most popular form of transportation.

At the welcome dinner, I was surprised by the type of food given to us. I walked into the room expecting to make a big bowl of rice and eat some meat. To my chagrin, It was all small horderves looking foods. I tried a couple but I didn’t really like them.

The Culture Smart book spoke about how welcoming and friendly the Vietnamese people are. I found this to be overwhelmingly true. Throughout the day, I always felt welcome by getting waves from strangers, gifts from our hosts, and taking pictures with the UEF students.
